Chief Engineer

Department: Deck & Technical
Brand: Costa Cruises

The ultimate responsibility for engine room management and the overall technical condition of the ship lies with the Chief Engineer. This includes ensuring the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of all technical equipment onboard. Communication and reporting to various stakeholders such as the Captain, ship’s council, subordinates, shore-side organizations, and crew are essential aspects of the role.

The Chief Engineer provides guidance to the Captain on technical, compliance, and economic matters, particularly related to the engine department. They must observe budget figures and ensure compliance with all relevant flag state, class, and other applicable regulations, as well as fulfill responsibilities from the Environmental Compliance Plan.

Assigning crew members to the engine department, organizing technical ship operation, and enforcing all relevant Health, Environment, Safety, and Security (HESS) topics within the department are crucial tasks. They oversee scheduled maintenance, preparation for upcoming shipyard periods, and the order of fuel, lubricants, spares, and consumption goods.

Supervision of fuel and lubricant bunker operations, verification of correct deliveries, and enforcement of environmental protection regulations within the engine department are also responsibilities. They ensure accurate record-keeping, including engine logbooks and oil record books, as required by legislation.

Economical management of resources, including frequent inventory checks of spares and consumables, is essential. The Chief Engineer manages the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), ensures technical documentation is updated, and communicates standing orders to the engine department.

Enforcement of compliance with the Environmental Compliance Plan (ECP) within the engine room is crucial. Additionally, they support an effective and sustainable health and safety culture onboard by strictly following HESS regulations and reporting any observed violations of the Company’s health procedures to the Head of Department.
